We will install as many street lights as needed to ensure the safety of women in Delhi- Arvind kejriwal

Delhi:EROS TIMES:  Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced the beginning of the installation of 2.1 lakh streetlights in Delhi in a press conference held at the Delhi Secretariat in the presence of Delhi’s PWD minister Satyendar Jain. The scheme will eliminate all the dark spots in Delhi and will prove to be a milestone in improving women’s safety in the national capital.

“The street light installation under the Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana is beginning today. We have worked hard in the last two months to fulfill all the procedural requirements for launching the installation process. 2.1 lakh street lights are being installed across Delhi. One major problem that existed was that of dark and dimly lit spots in the city. We have already identified the dark spots where street lights are necessary and will start the installation of streetlights today”, the Chief Minister said.

“Safeti Pin, a reputed NGO working on the safety and security of women, submitted its first report to the Delhi government in 2016, after carrying out a safety audit and identifying 7438 dark spots across the city. We have worked on lighting these dark spots in the last three years, and the number of dark spots which were identified in a subsequent safety audit carried out by SafetiPin over January to May 2019 was 2768. The dark spots in a period of two years were reduced by 4670 i.e. 63%”, the Chief Minister said.

“The biggest problem we faced in eliminating the dark spots is the lack of consent/approval from MCDs in installing poles and streetlights on their streets. This innovative scheme bypasses the role of the MCD and provides a direct solution to people’s problems of dark spots”, said the Chief Minister.

“Every MLA is coordinating with the people of their constituencies and the remaining dark spots will be eliminated soon. We are also asking citizens to submit suggestions for streetlights to their MLAs – just like we did with CCTVs.
We encourage all the people of Delhi to participate in identifying locations that need better lighting. Women’s safety is our priority and we will install as many street lights and use as many resources as possible to ensure the security of women in the city”, the Chief Minister added.

“We have devised a system wherein the installed street light will obtain power from the household connection of the building owners. The amount levied on the units consumed by street lights will be deducted and paid for by the Delhi government. These street lights are automatic and remotely controlled with a cloud-based sensor.
They will automatically turn on when it is dark and will stop when the sun rises in the morning. I will be inaugurating the installation today. By the end of January, 50,000 new street lights will be installed across Delhi and the entire installation work of 2.1 lakh street lights will be completed within four months”, the Chief Minister explained.

“Our government has already undertaken major initiatives to improve women’s safety. 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras have been installed across the city, and 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras are further being installed.
The installation of the CCTV cameras has made a positive impact in the city and the installation of the street lights will further ensure that Delhi remains safe. Safety and security of women have been among the topmost priorities of our government”, said the Chief Minister.

PWD Minister Satyendra Jain said, “In the commercial areas and main roads, street lights will be installed on poles. Apart from the residential buildings, street lights will be installed in commercial buildings, where poles can’t be erected in the congested areas in the city. This is a standard practice in many western countries”.

Important decisions taken in the Cabinet Meeting held today

– It was decided that the Delhi government will bear the board examination fees of all the students belonging to the Delhi government schools. Now, Delhi government schools situated in the NDMC and Delhi Cantonment areas are also included under the purview of this decision.

– We have also analyzed the results of all the subjects of the Delhi government schools and found out that the students are scoring above 95% in all subjects other than Mathematics and Science. However, the results in these two subjects have gone down, with students scoring less than 76% in Mathematics. The Delhi government has decided to hold extra coaching classes in schools so that the results in the subjects that are lagging behind can be brought on par with the scoring subjects. Extra coaching classes will also be held for students who have obtained compartment or have flunked in the board examinations.

Under the Entrepreneurship Curriculum, each student will be granted a seed money amount of Rs. 1000 to promote entrepreneurial mindset amongst students. Students will carry out an entrepreneurship project either individually, or along with other fellow students under the guidance of their teachers while justifying and elaborating on the profit or the loss incurred on the project. This initiative aims at building a thought process amongst the students on how to be entrepreneurs, rather than looking for jobs after their studies.

The benefits of the power subsidy for the residents of Delhi, under which free electricity is being provided up to a consumption of 200 units of electricity and at a half rate up to a consumption of 400 units of electricity, have been extended to the residents of Delhi Cantonment area.
