New Delhi:EROS TIMES: 20 December 2019—Scores of women Congress workers held a sudden demonstration outside the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to protest against police high-handedness on students who held a peaceful demonstration against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The sudden protest by the women Congress workers, under the leadership of Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress president Sharmistha Mukherjee, caught the security personnel off-guard. The angry women Congress demonstrators, including Advocate Shivani Chopra, shouted slogans against the BJP Government at the Centre.
Prominent other demonstrators included DPMC vice-president Priyanka Singh, district president Amarlata Sangwan, Kamlesh Choudhary, Pushpa Singh, Indu Suri, Rajkumari Dillo, Praveena Sharma, All India Mahila Congress general-secretary Neetu Verma Soin, Nandita Hooda and Natasha Sharma (Social Media National Co-ordinator)
Around 11 a.m, women Congress workers suddenly began assembling outside the residence of the Home Minister, and police force was reinforced.
After half-an-hour of heated arguments with the police, women cops forcefully arrested the Congress protesters and took them to the Mandir Marg police station.
The women protesters shouted slogans inside the police station which led to angry exchanges with the cops following which police made preparations to take them to jail.
As soon as the Congress leadership got wind of the arrests of the women workers, Congress workers started assembling outside the police station.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhash Chopra cancelled all his programmes and rushed to the Mandir Marg police station.
Chopra calmed down the angry women Congress workers, and after talking to senior officers, requested them to release the women Congress workers and leaders. After Subhash Chopra’s intervention, the women were released after furnishing personal bonds.
Sharmistha Mukherjee said that the Modi Government has been rattled by the students’ protest against CAA so much that a large police force did not allow the women Congress workers to hold a peaceful demonstration, which was their democratic right.
She said that the police high-handedness against the students was very deplorable, and the Modi Government has tormented people from all communities and religions.
She said that the Constitution has given equal rights to all to raise their voice in protest, but the BJP Government has become deaf and dump and is trying to silence the voice of dissent.
Advocate Shivani Chopra, strongly condemning the police action against the women Congress workers, asserted that the Modi Government cannot stifle the voice of students through force. She said that holding peaceful demonstrations were people’s democratic rights and the Congress party’s commitment to the students will only get stronger, adding that the party will keep raising its voice against injustice and high-handedness.
